A blind-stamps at head of title page (no ink stamps)Philip Henry Gosse (1810 –1888) was an English naturalist and popularizer of natural science, the virtual inventor of the seawater aquarium, and a painstaking innovator in the study of marine biology. Omphalos is almost certainly Gosse's most famous work, and was his attempt to reconcile the geological ages presupposed by Charles Lyell with the biblical account of creation. Gosse penned a succession of books and articles on natural history, some of which were (in his own words) pot-boilers" for religious publications.
