1861 Willams & Norgate. Presentation Copy to Sir George Murray Humphry, original blue-green publisher's cloth. [vi], 159pp. 8pp adverts bound in, and adverts on brick-red endpapers. 1st Edition, 1st Issue (with ads dated Feb. 1863). CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Original cloth has been restored - expertly rebacked with original spine laid down. Bumping to corners. Cloth has sunned to blue along rear cover spine edge. Binding very tight and secure. Original endpapers have been reinforced. From the Author in ink on half-title (in a secretarial hand?). Plate declaring the book having been subsequently gifted - by fellow anatomist Sir George Murray Humphry - pasted onto the front paste-down (see details below). Humphry clearly gave this book away, but the recipient is not noted. Internally the book is excellent with no foxing or ink marks. Scarce in original cloth and very hard to find in good condition. Though this example has seen a fair degree of restoration it shows very well indeed. A good presentation copy of the author's most important work. .. .At the present moment, therefore, the question of the relation of man to the lower animals resolves itself, in the end, into the larger question of the tenability or untenability of Mr. Darwin's views. [Man's Place in Nature - p. 106] Thomas Henry Huxley PC FRS (1825 –1895) was an English biologist (anatomist), known as Darwin's Bulldog" for his advocacy of Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection.
