John Murray, 1862 1st ed. vi, 365, [1] pp. plus 32- page publisher's advertisements dated December, 1861. Illus., folding plate. Orig. pictorial ribbed cloth. Expertly rebacked with orig. spine laid down. See my other unrestored copy.  Freeman 800. Asa Gray is quoted in the Life and Letters of Charles Darwin as saying, "if the orchid-book (with a few trifling omissions) had appeared before the 'Origin' the author would have been canonised rather than anathematised by the natural theologians," and notes that a review in the Literary Churchman found only one fault "that Mr. Darwin's expression of admiration at the contrivances in orchids is too indirect a way of saying, 'O Lord, how mainifold are Thy works.'" This work is concerend with figuring detailing the relationships between sexual structures of orchids and the insects which fertilize them, and attributes their evolution to natural selection. First edition. Cover faded to brown.  Rather than describe the condition in detail here, please ask for a full set of photos.
