1860, Murray, 2nd edition A tightly bound, restored copy. Some wear to corners. Front and rear covers are very good. Label of Mudie's Subscription Library to front cover. NB - there are no internal library indicators.) Original binding has been rebacked using vintage cloth and the original spine has been preserved. A little loss, especially to the lower left corner, but expertly repaired. Binding tight. Original endpapers have new hinges, using matching vintage paper. Foxing to early pages. Paper repair to half-title - at some stage an attempt to remove a previous ink name resulted in a small hole which has been covered using archival acid-free tissue. Scattered foxing and soiling throughout - nothing too serious or unsightly. Original folding diagram is in good condition, with some foxing spots. Closed marginal tears to p. 24 and p.203 have been professionally repaired. A good copy which was part of the subscription business that helped to ensure Darwin's phenomenal success. Charles Edward Mudie (1818 – 1890), an English publisher and founder of Mudie's Lending Library and Mudie’s Subscription Library, was the son of a second-hand bookseller and newsagent. In 1842, he began to lend books to students at the University of London, charging subscribers one guinea per year (see photo) for the right to borrow one volume of a book at a time. This proved so successful that in 1852 he moved his Select Library" to larger premises at 509
